Barras Market
'Barras Market' is a long-term photographic documentary series exploring the once thriving Glasgow landmark and the older generation of traders who still work there today. Established in 1921, the market holds an iconic place in the city’s history, a place steeped in nostalgia, now slowly fading. Though many stalls have closed over the past two decades, there remains a strong sense of community and camaraderie among the traders and their loyal customers, who not only work and visit the Barras but feel they belong to it.
In making this series, I have focused on the quieter, more ordinary moments of the market, when the bustle has eased and what is left are the small rituals and routines that define its rhythm. The same faces shuffle through the cold in search of bargains and bric a brac, stallholders banter across empty corridors lined with closed shutters, and the smell of bacon drifts from the cafe amid the low hum of conversation. I have tried to blend into these scenes and capture the essence of this self contained world, its timeworn textures, enduring friendships, and the steady presence of a community that carries on.
